Carlos Alcaraz of Spain is on course for defending his US Open title while Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus registered another dominant win as she is chasing the world number one sport for the first time.

Alcaraz might have dropped a set against Daniel Evans of Britain but once again played some fantastic tennis to set up a meeting with unseeded Matteo Arnaldi.

The 20-year-old won the first two sets 6-2 and 6-3 before going down 4-6 thanks to some sweetly-struck forehands and serves.

However, the Spaniard rallied back to take the fourth set 6-3.

"I know that nobody has defended the [men's] title here since Roger Federer, so I would love to be part of tournament history with Roger," Alcaraz said after the game.

"This is my main goal right now and I’m looking for that."

Second seed Sabalenka was in a league of her own as she breezed past Clara Burel of France 6-1, 6-1.

With hopes of claiming the number one spot from Iga Świątek of Poland, Sabalenka will have to get past Daria Kasatkina of Russia next.

Daniil Medvedev, Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys, Ons Jabeur, Jannik Sinner and Andrey Rublev were among the other winners on Saturday.

Medvedev was the last winner of the day, beating Sebastian Baez of Argentina in three sets.

After winning 6-2 in the first two sets, the third seed was trailing 5-2 in the third.

However, he held on to the late challenge from Baez to win 7-6.

Another all-American fourth round tie is in the hands as Pegula and Keys line-up against each other.

Pegula and Ukrainian Elina Svitolina were involved in an equal battle with 6-4 wins for both in the first two sets before the American stepped up to win the game with a 6-2 triumph in the third set.

Keys faced a tricky start against Liudmila Samsonova, with the Russian winning the first set 7-5.

But the 28-year-old wrapped up the game with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the second and third set.

Tunisian Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur notched a hard-fought 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 against Marie Bouzková of the Czech Republic, and will face Chinese 23rd seed Qinwen Zheng next.

Sinner came out on top in a heated battle against Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka.

The Italian won 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 and will be up against German Alexander Zverev, who himself was involved in a juicy encounter with Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, winning 6-7, 7-6, 6-1, 6-1.

That the German is leading the head-to-head record against Sinner with three wins is set to make the fourth-round tie more interesting.

Rublev meanwhile snatched his third win against a French opponent Arthur Cazaux and Gael Monfils in the first two rounds.

The three-time US Open quarter-finalist defeated Arthur Rinderknech 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, 7-5.
