Serbian Novak Djokovic fought back from two sets down to beat compatriot Laslo Djere 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 to reach the fourth round of the US Open.

The match against Djere was only the second time he came back from a two-set deficit at the US Open, with the last instance coming against Swiss great Roger Federer 12 years ago.

Djokovic is set to face Borna Gojo of Croatia next, with the hope of equalling Australian Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam titles.

"I would say two different matches, the first two [sets] and then the last three," Djokovic said after the win, before heaping praise on Djere.

"The scoreline doesn’t do it justice.

"I honestly have never seen him play like this.

"He was feeling the ball extremely well.

"Everything was kind of in his striking zone.

"He was tactically prepared very well. He started the match very, very good. He was far more comfortable than me.

"I was defending mostly in the first two sets."

Meanwhile, the United States players enjoyed a fantastic day in home surroundings with Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton, and Coco Gauff claiming wins.

A semi-finalist last year, Tiafoe started slowly before recovering to overcome 22nd seed Adrian Mannarino of France 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-6.

A fan favourite, he will play Aussie wild card Rinky Hijikata next.

Compared to Tiafoe, compatriot Fritz had it easy against Czech qualifier Jakub Menšík, with a comfortable 6,1, 6-2, 6-0 win.

The Americans have ensured a spot in the quarter-finals with Paul set to face Shelton next.

The 26-year-old Paul was unstoppable against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the first two sets, winning them 6-1, 6-0.

However, Fokina got one back with a 6-3 win in the third set before Paul prevailed with a 6-3 victory in the fourth.

Shelton also qualified in four sets against Russian Aslan Karatsev 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.

Coco Gauff seems to be making a habit from comebacks in this tournaments as she powered through with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory against Elise Mertens of Belgium.

The 19-year-old has set up a blockbuster round of 16 clash against Danish former world number one Caroline Wozniacki.

Back from her retirement, the Dane continued her fairytale by beating American Jennifer Brady, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Defending champion Iga Świątek of Poland also came out on top in round three while fourth seed and 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina was the upset of the day.

Świątek underlined her status as the best in the world with a 6-0, 6-1  win against Slovenian Kaja Juvan.

Kazakh player Rybakina was stopped by Sorana Cîrstea at the Louis Armstrong Stadium, with the Romanian winning 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
