Turkey have topped the medal standings of the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Judo World Championships after the conclusion of day one in Baku.

The country notched up two golds and two silvers to edge in front of Ukraine on two golds and one silver.

Nataliya Nikolaychyk got Ukraine off to the perfect start at the Heydar Aliyev Arena in Azerbaijan's capital.

The double Paralympic bronze medallist from London 2012 and Rio 2016 defeated Turkey's Ecem Çavdar in the women's J2 under-57-kilograms.

There was more misery in store for Turkey as Abdurrahim Ozalp fell to Iran's Abadi Seyed in the men's J1 under-60kg deciding bout.

Dondu Yesilyurt clinched Turkey's first gold in three finals with women's J1 under-57kg victory against Priscilla Gagne of Canada.

London 2012 champion Davyd Khorava then doubled the Ukrainian tally following his triumph over Thiego Marques of Brazil in the men's J2 under-60kg decider.

Inna Sych had the chance to make it three for Ukraine but Zeynep Çelik subjected her to a silver-medal finish.

The Turkish Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist finished their J2 women's under-57kg final on top.

Kazakhstan also recorded two gold medals but Sych's silver separates the two countries.

Akmaral Nauatbek struck first for Kazakhstan to beat France's Sandrine Martinet in the women's J2 under-48kg final.

The men's J1 under-73kg title was then clinched by fellow Kazakhstan judoka Yergali Shamey against Germany's Lennart Sass.

Competition is set to continue tomorrow in Baku before the final day takes place on Thursday (November 10).
