January 29 - Coventry has won the race to have a big screen installed in its city centre after being selected as a London 2012 Live Site location.

The Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership for the 2012 Games has been working with London 2012, Coventry City Council and other local partners to secure a Live Site in time for Olympics and Paralympics.

Funded by the National Lottery through the Olympic Lottery Distributor (OLD), London 2012 Live Sites are the destination for news, events and live screenings of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2010 and 2012.

They will bring a flavour of the Games to local communities.

During the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics there will be a national network of screens - both permanent and temporary - which will enable local communities to gather and watch London 2012 through this world-leading media concept.

A planning application is being prepared and, subject to planning permission, the screen proposed for Coventry is expected to join the existing network of 20 screens before summer 2011.

The city fought off fierce competition from other locations across the UK to be awarded the Live Site.

Tom Clift, Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership manager for the 2012 Games, said: "We are delighted to have secured a Live Site for Coventry and the West Midlands region, especially in light of the intense competition we faced from other major locations across the UK.

"The city’s selection as a Live Site location is a glowing endorsement of what has already been achieved in Coventry and Warwickshire and of our ambitious plans for the next two-and-a-half years and beyond.

"We are determined to engage with London 2012 more than any other region outside of the capital and this site will help us on the way to achieving that aim whilst enabling local communities to join in and be part of this once in a life time opportunity."

The screens are erected and run in partnership with London 2012 and the BBC, in association with London 2012 partners BT, Lloyds TSB and Cisco with funding from the OLD, and will cover both the Olympic and the Paralympic Games.

They carry a combination of local and national news and information, London 2012 updates, sponsor films and local community focused output. Each screen will be programmed to reflect life in its host community with a broad range of local content, events and partnerships with community, arts and media organisations.

The OLD is investing National Lottery money to fund the London 2012 Games. As well as providing funding of £2.62 million to fund big screens, it has provided £15.6 million to six of the ten major projects of the Cultural Olympiad and will also be providing up to £1.8 billion for the infrastructure of the Olympic Park and other Olympic facilities across the UK.
