Gina Böttcher has received the German Olympic Sportsperson of the Month award for April following her three golds at the European Para Swimming Championships in Portugal.

The 23-year-old triumphed in the SM4 150m individual medley, S4 50m backstroke and S4 50m freestyle on consecutive days to help Germany to a total of seven golds, five silvers and four bronze medals in Funchal, Madeira.

Around 4,000 of Germany's top elite and young athletes - supported by the German Sports Aid Foundation (Deutsche Sporthilfe) - chose the Sportsperson of the Month with rower Oliver Zeidler and judoka Anna-Maria Wagner completing the shortlist.

Böttcher attracted 41.9 percent of the vote to come out on top with Zeidler, who won his third European single sculls title in Hungary, second on 33.3 percent. Judo European Championship silver medallist Wagner received 24.8 percent of the votes cast.

"I am very surprised and very happy about this award," said Böttcher, who hopes to make her second Paralympic Games appearance in Paris this summer. "It hasn't quite sunk in yet how well the European Championships went for me. It's going to take a while, but it shows I'm on the right track to perform at my best in Paris and achieve good results."

The para swimming events at the Paris 2024 Paralympics take place from 29 August to 7 September in La Defense Arena.
