On Friday, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) informed the International World Games Association (IWGA) in a letter of its decision regarding the potential host city for the 2029 The World Games. Previously, both Karlsruhe and Hanover had expressed their desire to host the 13th edition of this multi-sport event in Germany.

The south-western German city has emerged as the leading candidate to host the Games for the second time, marking a significant milestone in its sporting history. The decision follows the organisation of the event 40 years ago in 1989.

IWGA President José Perurena said, "We are very pleased with the Karlsruhe's bid and will be working closely with them in the coming weeks. "While our main focus is currently on the 2025 The World Games in Chengdu, China, it is reassuring and a very positive sign that we already have a lot of interest for the next edition. This makes it easier for us to plan for the future.

The Mayor of Karlsruhe, Frank Mentrup, was delighted to hear that the DOSB had proposed Karlsruhe as the host city for the 2029 The World Games: "This decision shows that Karlsruhe was able to assert itself with the special profile of its bid: Games in the heart of Europe, supported by the entire social spectrum of the city and the region".

The final decision on the host city for the 2029 World Games will be made by the IWGA. It will then be formally ratified at the Annual General Meeting to be held in early May. The upcoming iteration of The World Games is scheduled to take place from 7-17 August 2025, with Chengdu, China, designated as the host city.
