The Scots were beaten 6-3 by Belgium at the Curl Aberdeen venue as the match ended after seven of the eight scheduled ends.

Led by skip Timo Verreycken, Belgium were considered heavy underdogs but a three-point display in the second end proved vital in securing the upset.

Meanwhile, Sweden got off to phenomenal start in their first group match against The Netherlands by scoring four in the opening end.

Johan Nygren then guided his side to a 9-4 victory before they triumphed again in a later session by beating Japan 8-5.

Sweden missed out on the podium at last year's tournament, as they lost the bronze medal match 6-4 to Switzerland.

Judging by the first day, the Swedes look good value to challenge for a medal as they seek to beat their best finish of second place achieved in 2015 and 2016.

Scotland got over their rocky start with a dominant performance in the third session.

Jack Strawhorn's side dispatched Wales 11-0 in what was one of the biggest wins of the day.

Defending champions Canada got their campaign off to an ideal start with two victories from as many games.

Felix Asselin, Laurie St-Georges, Emile Asselin, and Emily Rilley combined to decimate Finland 10-1. 

The Finns never stood a chance as they instantly went down 3-0 in the first end before a scoreless second. 

Canada then kept their tally ticking over with three consecutive scoring ends.

Finland's sole point came in the sixth before the match was ended with two ends remaining.

Canada's second win came at the expense of Chinese Taipei who they cruised past 8-3, including scoring three shots in end five.

Spain lead Group C after cruising past Brazil and Austria 8-1 and 9-4, respectively.

Competition is set to continue tomorrow with four more sessions of matches scheduled, including Scotland playing England.
