United States dominated the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Women's Under-25 World Championship in Bangkok as they won the title for the third time.

The Americans eased past Britain in the final in the Thai capital, winning 72-49 at Bangkok Youth Center.

It meant the US defended the world title they claimed in 2019 while they also won the 2011 tournament.

Britain won gold at the 2015 event - the only other tournament to be played - but the US did not enter.

In the semi-finals, the Americans eased past China 61-19, while Britain beat Spain 54-41.

The US thrashed hosts Thailand 59-24 in the quarter-finals, with Britain seeing off Japan 72-39, Spain beating Germany 56-43 and China knocking out Canada 38-26.

In the group stages, the US won all four of their matches, including a 69-42 win over Britain.

The tournament had started in dramatic circumstances when heavy rain and thunderstorms caused structural damage at the Indoor Huamark Stadium, the original venue, which meant the Opening Ceremony and first match were postponed.

Organisers were able to relocate to Bangkok Youth Center and the event was completed with a slightly amended schedule.

"First and foremost we are extremely grateful and lucky that no-one was seriously injured in the accident at the venue," said IWBF secretary general Norbert Kucera on day one.

"The safety and well-being of our participants, officials, volunteers and spectators remain our paramount concern.

"Although this relocation poses challenges, we are unwavering in our commitment to ensuring a successful and safe event for everyone involved.

"We are grateful for your understanding and flexibility during this time and eagerly anticipate an exciting and resilient competition in our new venue."
