Riccardo Pianosi of Italy and Ellie Aldridge of Britain won the men's and women's gold medals respectively at the 2023 Formula Kite European Championships in Portsmouth.

Frenchman Maxime Nocher, German Jannis Maus and compatriot Lorenzo Boschetti were the other athletes in the final.

The 18-year-old came back to pip Nocher, who had race one in the bag, for the title.

"Grazie a tutti!" said Pianosi.

"I caught some big seaweed in the first race and that made life difficult.

"I crashed three times but then in the second race I sailed perfectly and I won.

"It’s unbelievable, the best feeling in the world."

Boschetti settled for the bronze medal after six days of competition that saw 112 riders from 28 countries take part.

Aldridge was joined by Poema Newland of France, countrywoman Lily Young, and Annelous Lammerts of The Netherlands in the final.

The Briton started strongly, establishing a good lead before struggling to maintain power in her kite through the gybe at the final slalom turning mark.

However, she learned from her mistakes in the next race to seal the top spot in the podium.

I was trying not to think about what had just happened," she said.

"I remember what happened to Katie [Dabson, fellow British rider] last year and wondered if I’d be able to get through the gybe OK."

A penalty for infringement for Newland meant that Lammerts took silver, forcing the former to settle for bronze.

Formula kite is due to make its Olympic debut at Paris 2024.

The next main regatta to take place is the Kitefoil World Series, scheduled from October 4 to 8 in Lake Traunsee, Austria.
