World Triathlon's Executive Board has approved an initial calendar for 2024 here, with three of the six events on the Championship Series set to contribute towards Olympic qualification.

The Executive Board met prior to the start of the World Triathlon Championship Finals in Pontevedra, where it confirmed six events on the top-tier Championship Series for 2023, three of which are set to include mixed relays, 11 World Triathlon Cup events and nine Para triathlon competitions.

The calendar also includes a Mixed Relay Olympic Qualification Event in the Mexican resort of Huatulco on May 19, the World Triathlon Multisport Championships in the Australian city of Townsville from August 15 to 25, and the World Triathlon Powerman Long Distance Duathlon Championships in the Swiss city of Zofingen.

For the second year running, the Championship Series is set to start in the United Arab Emirates' capital Abu Dhabi with sprint distance races and a mixed relay on March 2 and 3, followed by two standard distance events in Yokohama in Japan on May 11 and Cagliari in Italy on May 25 and 26, representing the final opportunity for Paris 2024 qualification ranking points.

Hamburg in Germany is set to stage the final Championship Series stop before Paris 2024 on July 14 including a mixed relay, with Olympic individual events in the French capital then taking place on July 30 and 31 and the mixed relay on August 5.

Four World Cups are planned within the qualification period - a sprint event in New Plymouth in New Zealand on March 9 and 10, a first indoor event in Lievin in France on March 30, Samarkand in Uzbekistan's first staging of an event on the circuit with standard distance competition from May 17 to 19, the same dates as a sprint World Cup in Huatulco.

The inaugural Indoor World Cup at a purpose-built venue in Lievin is set to provide only world ranking points, not Olympic qualifying points.

After Paris 2024, another Championship Series event is planned in the Canadian city of Montreal on September 14 and in the sprint distance and mixed relay, followed by the Finals in the Spanish city of Málaga from October 17 to 20.

Sunderland in Britain and Championship Finals host Pontevedra in Spain, from this year's Championship Series, do not feature again for 2024.

World Cups are also scheduled in the Czech city of Karlovy Vary, Valencia in Spain, Italian capital Rome, Tangier in Morocco, Brazil's capital Brasilia, Viña del Mar in Chile and Miyazaki in Japan through to November 10.

In Para triathlon, Para Cups are scheduled in Abu Dhabi on March 2 and 3, Samarkand on May 18 and 19 and Besançon in France on June 15 and 16, as well as Para Series events in Devonport in Australia on March 16 and 17, Yokohama on May 11, Swansea in Britain on June 22 and 23 and Montreal on June 29 and 30 within the Paris 2024 qualification period.

An additional Para Cup in Long Beach in the United States is scheduled for July 20 and 21, followed by Paralympic Games competition in Paris on September 1 and 2 and the World Championships in Málaga from October 17 to 20.

A venue for the Mixed Relay World Championships is expected to be decided in the coming weeks, and World Triathlon said more events would also be added to the schedule.
