Novak Djokovic's coach has hinted after earning his 24th men's singles Grand Slam at the US Open that the Serbian tennis great could play at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The 36-year-old is already the record holder for most men's Grand Slams, and drew level with the 24 won by Australia's Margaret Court on the overall list after his victory over Russian neutral Daniil Medvedev in New York City yesterday.

Although Djokovic would be 41 at the Games in five years' time, his Croatian coach Goran Ivanišević suggested Los Angeles 2028 could be a target when asked about his future plans.

"That question you have to ask him when he comes very soon," Ivanišević said.

"I don't think so.

"No, no, he's planning to play Olympic Games in Los Angeles."

Djokovic's only Olympic medal to date is a men's singles bronze at Beijing 2008, having finished fourth at London 2012 and Tokyo 2020 and lost in the first round at Rio 2016.

Ivanišević, the Wimbledon champion in 2001, competed for Croatia at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and won bronze medals in the singles and doubles.

Tennis at Los Angeles 2028 is due to be held at the Dignity Health Sports Park.

The sport was on the programme from the inaugural Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 until Paris 1924, and despite two appearances as a demonstration sport did not return until Seoul 1988.

It has been an ever-present since then, with mixed doubles added to the men's and women's singles and doubles from London 2012 to take the medal events up to five.

Djokovic played men's singles and doubles at Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016, before featuring in singles and mixed doubles at Tokyo 2020.
