Olympic silver medallist Ahmed Elgendy topped an Egyptian one-two-three to be crowned men’s African champion on home soil.

There was also delight for Egypt in the women’s event, with 18-year-old Malak Ismail sealing victory to take the other African spot at Paris 2024.

Rhys Lanskey and 19-year-old Genevieve van Rensburg claimed the respective men’s and women’s Oceania places for Australia.

Ahmed Elgendy overcame his younger brother Mohamed Elgendy to take gold, with Eslam Hamad completing a clean sweep for Egypt.

"I’m so happy to be qualified to Paris 2024 through the African Championships, it’s a dream coming true as I am looking forward for a new, historical win in Paris," said Ahmed Elgendy.

Lanskey overcame compatriot Timothy Oliver to be the top Oceanian in the standings, while Naoki Toyomura of New Zealand placed third in the region.

"Personally it’s been a difficult couple of years battling some injuries, and although I’m still a long way from my best, I am very happy to have come here and won the Oceania Championships and a quota place for Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympics," said Lanskey.

Ismail, who is the reigning under-19 world champion, captured the women’s African title to seal an Olympic quota for Egypt, beating van Rensburg and Egypt’s two-time Olympian Haydy Morsy.

"This race was a hard one, as it was very strong competition between all the girls and of course a harder one as we were competing for an Olympic quota," said Ismail.

"I started fencing in a good position, then riding was very good, swimming was great too and I started laser run in second position.

"In the third lap I was unfortunately in the third position, I remained in this position until the last shooting, I entered it in third and got out of the range first.

"I don’t believe that I have done it! It was really an amazing and nice race for me.

"And, of course, I’m very proud of myself and for this great achievement, and still hungry for more."

Van Rensburg added: "There aren’t enough words for how happy and excited I am. 

"This is honestly a dream come true.

"I am so grateful for my coaches, friends and family who have supported me through this journey. I couldn’t have done it without them."
