Kenyan taekwondo star Faith Ogallo has vowed to win a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics before travelling to France for a training camp.

"I'm confident of securing a ticket to Paris and, once there, my goal is to grab a medal," Ogallo said.

Ogallo has travelled to Miramas in the south of France for the camp as part of a deal signed by the Kenyan Olympic Committee for athletes to prepare there for next summer's Olympics.

"Besides the training camp, we will take part in ranking tournaments across Europe to ensure we get closer to qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics," Ogallo explained.

Ogallo had been Kenya's only representative in taekwondo and finished equal seventh in the heavyweight division at Tokyo 2020 after losing to Serbia’s Milica Mandic.

Ogallo had won silver at the last African Games held four years ago in Rabat and also took bronze at the African Championships held in Dakar in 2021.

She has been successful competing for the police in domestic competitions this season.

"I've had a good season thus far in the local league and I hope to extend the good run further abroad," Ogallo added.

She had switched from basketball to taekwondo in 2018 on the advice of Eliakim Otieno, a sports scientist and taekwondo coach at Kibabii University where she was a student.

"Coach Otieno convinced me to switch my attention and dedicate myself fully to taekwondo, telling me I possessed the qualities to succeed in the sport," Ogallo said.

If she competes in Paris, she will be the first woman to compete for Kenya in taekwondo at the Olympics since Milka Akinyi at Beijing 2008.
