Bahamas’ men’s basketball team stunned Argentina to advance to the next stage in the qualification process for next year’s Olympics in Paris.

Argentina captured gold at Athens 2004 and bronze at Beijing 2008 but will not compete at Paris 2024 following their defeat to Bahamas in the Americas Olympic pre-qualifying tournament.

Despite having home advantage, Argentina fell to an inspired Bahamas side who secured an 82-75 triumph at the Santiago del Estero.

It will be the first time Argentina have not featured in the men's Olympic basketball tournament since Sydney 2000.

Bahamas’ men’s team, meanwhile, are looking to compete at the Olympics for the first time.

Eric Gordon played a starring role for Bahamas, scoring 27 points, while Buddy Hield contributed with 17 points and Deandre Ayton finished with 10 points and 21 rebounds.

Bahamas are one of five winners of the continental pre-qualifying tournaments, with Bahrain, Cameroon, Croatia and Poland also advancing.

Eric Gordon was fantastic for Bahamas once again with 27 points and six made three-pointers.

Bahrain emerged victorious from the Asian event after winning all five of their matches staged in Syria.

Cameroon won the Africa ticket to the next phase on the road to Paris 2024 after beating Senegal 80-74.

Staged at the Eko Convention Center in Nigerian city Lagos, Cameroon won all of their matches before taking down Senegal in the final.

Samir Gbetkom notched a game-high 19 points in the triumph while Jeremiah Hill registered 14 assists.

The European qualifier was held across Turkey, Poland and Estonia with 16 countries participating.

Poland made home advantage count as they overcame Bosnia and Herzegovina 76-72 in the final at the Gliwice Arena.

Aleksander Balcerowski was key to Poland’s success, while Michał Sokołowski top scored with 16 points in the final.

Fellow hosts Turkey would have been hoping to join Poland but were defeated 84-71 at the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul.

Dario Šarić notched 22 points and 11 rebounds as Croatia proved too strong for Turkey.

All five qualified teams move through to next year’s International Basketball Federation Olympic Qualifying Tournament, which will determine the remaining spots for Paris 2024.

A total of six Olympic places are set to be awarded at the FIBA Basketball World Cup, set to begin across Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines on Friday (August 25).
