Slovenian shooter Franček Gorazd Tiršek is targeting an elusive gold medal at next year’s Paralympics in Paris after capturing the R4 mixed 10 metre air rifle standing SH2 title at the European Para Championships here.

Tiršek has fallen agonisingly short of winning gold in the event at the past three Paralympics having collected silvers at London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

The 48-year-old is now looking to go one step further after securing a quota for Slovenia following his triumph at the Rotterdam Ahoy.

Despite admitting to struggling with health issues in recent days, Tiršek held his nerve to seal the title with a score of 254.0 points.

It was enough to see off Ukraine’s Vitalii Plakushchyi who posted 253.5 for silver, while Tanguy De La Forest of France bagged bronze with 232.0.

"This competition was so difficult," said Tiršek.

"I have had a lot of health problems in the last few days so it’s a fantastic win really.

"I am very tired now.

"I just want to go to bed and sleep.

"It was the result of all my hard work.

"I know all the competitors as we compete against each other everywhere.

"It is really crazy how high the standard is and sometimes you need a bit of luck.

"But, today, I was superior during the whole final so I think the gold is well deserved.

"Now I can look to Paris [2024 Paralympic Games] where my aim is to win the gold."

Nicole Haeusler was the highest placed female shooter after placing seventh to seal a ticket to Paris 2024 for Switzerland.

Andrii Doroshenko of Ukraine was also celebrating after capturing the R1 men’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 crown.

The Paralympic silver medallist proved too strong, winning with 248.4 to clinch the title and a Paris 2024 quota for Ukraine.

Poland’s Marek Dobrowolski finished on 245.8 for silver, while Martin Jørgensen overcame fellow Dane Jan Winther for bronze with 225.1.

"It a result of hard work and hard training," said Doroshenko.

"I made some small mistakes, but everything (after) went right.

"It’s a glory to be here [representing Ukraine], also in such difficult times for our country right now."

Quota places for the Paris 2024 Paralympics were also decided in Para archery.

Victoria Kingstone earned a solitary slot in the women’s W1 class for Britain after beating Turkey’s Nil Misir 120-11 in the final.

Tamás Gáspár won a place for Hungary after overcoming another Turkish opponent in Yigit Caner Aydin 140-134 in the men’s W1 gold-medal match.

The top two archers in the men’s recurve open and men’s compound open categories also earned quotas for their respective country.

The men’s compound open final saw Finland’s Jere Forsberg defeat Slovakia’s Martin Doric 147-143.

Dejan Fabcic of Slovenia came out on top in the men’s recurve open division, beating Ukraine’s Vasyl Naumchuk 6-0 in the final.

Para cycling competition also got underway in Rotterdam with mixed team relay races held at Scheepvaartkwartier.

Each cyclist tackled three laps of the course as part of three-strong teams.

Johan Quaile, Vincent and Joseph Fritsch steered France to victory in a time of 18min 19sec.

Italy were leading the way going into the final four laps only to be overhauled by the French team with Quaile putting distance between himself and Federico Mestroni.

Fritsch was in a comfortable position going into the final lap as he punched the air before crossing the finish line.

Italy came second with 18:25, while Germany won the battle for bronze in 18:35.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow.
