Chinese Taipei captured two of the three titles on offer on the opening day of the World Taekwondo Grand Prix Challenge in Muju where hosts South Korea also tasted victory.

Tien yu Jhuang secured the first of those golds for Chinese Taipei with success in the women’s under-49 kilogram division at the T1 Arena in the South Korean city.

Having not dropped a single round in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, Jhuang came into the gold-medal bout in confident mood.

Oh Seo-rin of South Korea presented a tough challenge but Jhuang proved too strong, triumphing 2-0.

Thailand’s Kamonchanok Seeken overcame South Korea’s Lee Ye-ji in the third-placed match to complete the podium.

Chinese Taipei celebrated their second title when Wei‐chun Lin emerged victorious from the women's under-57kg category.

Lin produced a commanding display to see off Thi anh Tuyet Tran of Vietnam in the final.

The bronze medal was won by Kim’s team-mate Seok Ha-bin who overcame Lim Dae-won in an all-South Korean third-placed match.

The final place on the podium was taken by South Korea’s Seok Ha-bin following his win against compatriot Lim Dae-won in the bronze-medal bout.

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue delivered a speech at the welcome party of the Grand Prix Challenge where he described the event as "a pathway for aspiring athletes to fulfil their dreams to become taekwondo stars".

"I am proud to share with you that seven athletes from the inaugural GP Challenge went on to win medals in other WT-promoted events," said Choue.

"This would not have been possible without the GP Challenge.

"Therefore, World Taekwondo is committed to continue promoting such opportunities for aspiring athletes, including for Para taekwondo which will take place next month.

"To all athletes, I wish you all the best in the GP Challenge and look forward to even greater achievements from you."

Competition is due to continue tomorrow with medals set to be contested in the women’s under-67kg, men’s under-68kg and men’s under-80kg divisions.
