Paris 2024 organisers have received 239 applications from communities across France which want to host a fan zone during next year's Olympics and Paralympics.

The places all want to stage celebration areas as part of the "Clubs 2024" project surrounding the Games.

A first map of sites is due to be reviewed on June 19, with the fan zones set to allow people to experience Paris 2024 and watch the action, even if they do not have a ticket.

Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, France's Sports Minister, has said it is "essential" for the Games to reach "all territories and all French people".

Three larger "live sites" are already confirmed for the Paris region at the Parc de la Villette, the Trocadéro and Georges-Valbon Park.

The 239 other applications will now be vetted by Paris 2024 organisers.

Thirty-three of the bids come from places which are already due to host competitions or training sites, according to Le Monde.

Both large cities and smaller places are among the potential projects, but no financial support will come from the Paris 2024 budget.

Organisers will assist with visual identity, communications and providing television coverage, however.

Places selected for a fan zone will have to prove that they can provide adequate security at the site.

Fan zones could prove to be particularly important for people hoping to engage with Paris 2024, after organisers were criticised for ticket prices many saw as being too expensive.
