The two victories came at the start and finish of a memorable night of competition for the host nation at the K.D. Jadhav Indoor Hall in Indian capital New Delhi.

Nitu was the first to deliver success for India when she secured the minimumweight crown in the opening bout of the night.

Facing Mongolia’s Altantsetseg Lutsaikhan, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion proved too strong as she came out firing to win the opening round 5-0.

The Mongolian fired some shots but Nitu was shading the exchanges as she took the second round 3-2 before dominating the third to clinch victory by unanimous decision.

Saweety ended the night in thrilling fashion for India when she defeated Wang Lina of China in the light heavyweight final.

Seeded number one for the category, Saweety was one of India’s strongest gold-medal hopes but she showed little sign of any pressure getting to her.

The Indian star came out swinging, throwing numerous punches to put Wang under plenty of pressure.

Her attacking intent thrilled the home supporters as Saweety kept testing Wang until victory was sealed by split decision.

China might have lost the final fight of the day but they still finished with two titles to their name courtesy of success for Wu Yu and Yang Chengyu.

Yang was involved in a scrappy light welterweight final against Russia’s Nataliya Sychugova but managed to do enough to emerge victorious.

Sychugova tried to stand up to the test but came up short against Yang who triumphed by split decision.

China’s other gold came when Wu overcame Italy’s Sirine Charaabi to seal the flyweight title.

After the disappointment of Charaabi’s loss, Italy bounced back to clinch featherweight gold thanks to a brilliant performance from Olympic bronze medallist Irma Testa.

The Italian boxer refused to settle for a second successive silver medal at the Women’s World Championships as she produced a classy performance to see off Kazakhstan’s Karina Ibragimova.

The Kazakh fighter battled hard but Testa was on a different level as she landed a series of superb shots to claim victory by unanimous decision.

Russia also responded after losing their first fight of the day with a victory as Anastasiia Demurchian defeated Australia’s Kaye Scott in the light middleweight final.

Scott was aiming to become Australia’s first-ever world boxing champion but the 38-year-old was well beaten by 18-year-old Demurchian.

The Russian boxer rarely looked troubled as she dispatched Scott by unanimous decision in a dominant display.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow.
