French duo Axelle Gachet-Mollaret and Emily Harrop clinched the women's long-distance world title once again at the International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF) World Championships Long Distance Team at La Grande courses in Ponte di Legno.

The pair dominated the competition finishing in 4 hrs 57 mins 55 secs, which was almost 10 minutes in front of second-placed compatriots sisters Lena and Candice Bonnel.

In third was Italian pair Giulia Compagni and Illaria Veronese, who were 16 minutes behind the winners.

The other Italian partnership of Giulia Murada and Alba de Silvestro were in hold of second, but were forced to forfeit as Murada was not feeling well enough to continue the race.

Gachet-Mollaret and Harrop have now won four team races in two years, a list that includes the 2023 World Championships team race, the 2022 Tour du Rutor, 2023 Pierra Menta and 2023 Adamello Ski Raid.

"Really, really hard day with not-so-good visibility for most of the race," said Harrop.

"Maybe the hardest part of the race was the last downhill.

"We are happy to win the gold.

"It’s always a pleasure to race with Axelle, we are a good team and enjoy each race we do together."

On the men's side, Italians Robert Antonioli and Matteo Eydallin secured victory in 4:04:24, as they won their second World Championship of the month after their performance in Boí Taüll, Spain.

Mathéo Jacquemoud and Samuel Equy of France, the defending champions, went head-to-head with the Italians but fell back and finished almost three minutes behind.

In third was the other French pairing William Bon Mardion and Xavier Gachet, who were seven minutes behind the winners.

"I know this race very well, as it was my fifth start here," said Eydallin.

"So I told Robert to remember to drink and eat and go at our regular pace.

"Today, the French team was very strong.

"We created a small gap in Cresta Croce, then did the last climb and downhill full gas.

"The legs are not so happy about this strategy, but we were able to win, so we are happy."

The course was 39 kilometres long, and it included a 3,115 metre ascent and 3,455 negative metres.

The next round on the ISMF World Cup circuit is due to be held in Tromso, Norway, from April 11 to 15.
