The Small States of Europe Karate Federation (SSEKF) has held a meeting with the European Karate Federation (EKF) to discuss preparations for the forthcoming Small States of Europe Karate Championships.

The meeting was chaired by SSEKF President Andreas Vasileiou, with EKF secretary general Davor Cipek also in attendance, and was held on the sidelines of the EKF’s Cadet, Junior and Under-21 Championships in Larnaca, Cyprus.

The current status of the SSEKF was also discussed, while karate’s participation in the 2025 Games of the Small States of Europe was also covered.

Following discussion around karate’s inclusion in the 2025 Games of the Small States of Europe it was agreed to work on a development project to maximise opportunities presented by the Games.

The project is set to be distributed among National Federations prior to the EKF’s Senior Championships, due to be held in Guadalajara, Spain, from March 22 to 26.

President of the EKF and the World Karate Federation Antonio Espinos, who was also present at the meeting said: "As the popularity of karate continues growing in all the countries in Europe, it is of the utmost importance to highlight our strength at events such as the 2025 Games of the Small States of Europe.

"I am convinced that our sport will have a tremendous impact at the event in Andorra, and for that, I want to thank all the members of the SSEKF and its President Andreas Vasileiou for their hard work towards the progress of karate."

This year’s Games of the Small States of Europe is due to be held in Valletta, Malta from May 28 to June 3, although karate has not made the cut for this edition.

Karate is set to feature at the 2025 edition, due to be held in Andorra, which would mark the sport’s debut in the multi-sport event, contested by nations that have a population of fewer than one million at the time of entry.
