International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Executive Council member Francisca Ravestein has been recognised for her contribution to the sport with a promotion to the title of Officer in The Netherlands' Order of Orange-Nassau.

Ravestein was presented with the decorations for the fourth grade of the Order of Orange-Nassau by the King’s Commissioner in South Holland Jaap Smit.

She was first made a Member of the Order of Orange Nassau in the Dutch honours system in 1998, becoming a Knight four years later.

An IWBF Board member since 2014, Ravestein now also chairs its Commission for Legal Matters and Eligibility.

Her work in basketball at a national and international level earned her the promotion.

IWBF President Ulf Mehrens said it was just reward for Ravestein's efforts.

"Francisca has played and plays a crucial role to advocate for the inclusion in sport from the grassroots to the elite level of sport to build up sustainable and effective structures of equality and inclusion," Mehrens said.

"Since becoming a member of the IWBF Executive Council in 2014, she has chaired the Commission for Legal Matters and Eligibility, overseeing IWBF’s legal affairs, regulations, membership applications of new member nations and the international transfers of players.

"On behalf of IWBF, we congratulate Francisca on receiving this well-deserved honour."

Ravestein chaired the Dutch Basketball Association for a decade from 2010 until 2020, during which time the country hosted the Under-17 Women's Basketball World Cup in 2012, the 3x3 Europe Cup in 2017 and the 3x3 World Cup and Women’s European Wheelchair Basketball Championship in 2019.

Until earlier this year, she was Mayor of the Municipality of Pijnacker-Nootdorp, a position she first assumed in 2014.

The Netherlands won the women's wheelchair basketball tournament at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
