Nigeria's Lucy Ejike dethroned defending champion China's Tan Yujiao to take gold in a dramatic women's up-to-67 kilograms event at the World Para Powerlifting Championships in Tbilisi.

Ejike, who won bronze in the under-61kg class at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, managed a best lift of 126kg, one clear of Tan.

The Chinese athlete attempted 129kg with the final lift of the competition but registered a no lift due to an unsuccessful chest sequence, handing the Nigerian her third world title.

Ejike is the first Nigerian to claim gold at this year's Championships in the Georgian capital.

Four-time champion Fatma Omar of Egypt edged out Chinese debutant Liao Liya by 1kg to earn bronze.

"I feel so great to come back to my normal position, again winning the gold medal," said Ejike.

Paralympic bronze medallist Hocine Bettir of Algeria finally got his hands on the world title after winning the men's up-to-65kg event.

Bettir went one better than his silver medal from the last World Championships to claim gold after lifting 194kg.

Thomas Kura from Nigeria and China’s Zou Yi both attempted 195kg after Bettir’s final lift, but neither were cleared.

Iran’s Amir Jafari took silver, 1kg behind Bettir, while Zou did enough for bronze having produced a best attempt of 192kg.

The Championships continue tomorrow, when a further three weight categories will be contested.
