South Korea's team has requested that Korean food be made available at the Lucerne 2021 Winter Universiade.

Hwayeon Yon, the team's deputy manager for the student event, told the International University Sport Federation (FISU) website that work had begun to ensure the local cravings of athletes can be satisfied in Switzerland.

Korean delicacy kimchi now looks set to be included on the menu for South Korea's 80 athletes and 40 officials who are due to travel to Lucerne and surrounding venues.

"I made a request to include kimchi in the Asian cuisine section at the last heads of delegation meeting," said Hwayeon.

"Kimchi and Korean food is not only for the Korean delegation, but is now a globally preferred cuisine from all around the world.

"Plus, there are Korean restaurants in Lucerne, so we are also planning on providing Korean food [from these].

"This still needs further consideration due to the reason that competitions will be held in five different regions.

"We are still thinking of ways to provide Korean meals to the athletes in other regions."

Lucerne 2021 is due to take place between December 11 and 21.

South Korea is due to compete in every sport except ski mountaineering.

The country is bidding for the 2027 edition of the FISU Games, which it hopes to stage in Chungcheong Province.
