Basil Bielich has been appointed as the new President of the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association (IOMCGA).

He replaces Juliet Holt, who had held the position for the last 11 years.

Bielich had been vice-president of the IOMCGA for the past two years.

A South African by birth, Bielich is managing director of chartered accountants Brown Caine & Co.

He serves as treasurer of several charities, associations and sports clubs on the Isle of Man.

"It's an honour to have been elected as the next President of the Association especially at such an exciting time as we approach the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia," he said.

"There is a lot of work to be done ahead of the Games in April including important fundraising, travel arrangements and other administration in order to get the team to Australia."

Bielich added: "I look forward to working with all the sports associations to ensure that all athletes have the best opportunity to gain selection to a strong Team Isle of Man and to to be able to represent our nation on the International sporting stage.

"Being able to guide the association as President is a real privilege."

The Isle of Man won one medal at Glasgow 2014, a silver for track cyclist Peter Kennaugh in the points race.

Their best performance at the Commonwealth Games was the last time the event was held in Australia, at Melbourne 2006.

Mark Cavendish won the gold medal in the men's scratch cycling race and shooters Trevor Boyles and Dave Walton a bronze in the men's trap pairs.

Since making their Commonwealth Games debut at Cardiff 1958, the Isle of Man have won a total of 11 medals, three of them gold.
