France’s Joris Daudet claimed Baku 2015 men’s BMX gold as cycling competition at the European Games drew to a close here today.

He was one of three Frenchman in the eight-man final as he was joined by Sylvain Andre and the Ivory Coast-born Amidou Mir behind the The Netherlands’ Twan van Gendt, the fastest qualifier.

Van Gendt had produced the fastest time of 32.768sec which ensured he would enjoy the best starting gate for the final, and he made use of it by moving into an early lead over the field.

Daudet was immediately onto the Dutchman’s wheel, though, and having rapidly taken one of the early corners the 23-year-old French champion swept into the lead.

He proved impossible to haul back as maintained his advantage to cross the line in 33.01, European Games gold adding to his 2011 world title.

Van Gendt was forced to settle for silver, having clocked 33.887, while Switzerland, who had started the Games with cycling gold in the women's mountain bike, ended with cycling bronze as David Graf was third around the circuit in 34.166.

The women’s race saw Denmark’s Simone Christensen burst out of the gates into an early advantage and she continued to build on her advantage as field closed in on the finish.

Christensen avoided any accidents in the finishing straight to ensure she had led from start to finish of the race as she posted a time of 37.074 to take the victory.

"I knew it was going to be a tough final and I knew I had to have a really good gate to be part of the medals here so going home with gold is just unbelievable,” she said.

“I'm so happy,"

France’s Magalie Pottier secured the silver medal in 37.287, with the Czech Republic’s Aneta Hladikova finishing with bronze in 37.891.
