Vio beat reigning Paralympic champion Fang Yao of China in their women’s category B foil semi-final match-up, and she took that form into the gold medal match, proving too strong for another Chinese competitor in Jingjing Zhou.

The Italian star earned a 15-10 win to give the home crowd something to cheer about, ensuring she goes into the World Championships in Eger, Hungary in September as the firm favourite.

Her World Cup victory came after success at last year’s World Cup in Eger, the Grand Prix in Hong Kong, China and also May’s World Cup in Montreal, Canada.

Alessio Sarri earned another win for the host nation as he claimed a tense triumph in the men’s category B foil.

Following a narrow one-point victory against China's Siu Lun Leung in the last four, Sarri managed to top the podium by edging Britain’s Dimitri Coutya 15-10.

Britain did clinch one title however thanks to Piers Gilliver, who reigned supreme in the category A epee discipline thanks to beating French world number two Romain Noble in the final.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for Hong Kong's Yu Chui Yee, who was in search of a first triumph in eight months but she could not  quite take gold in Pisa.

She reached the final and looked in good touch to take home the title but she suffered a narrow 15-14 defeat to Hungary’s defending European champion Zsuzsanna Krajnyak as her long run without a win continued.

Outside of the individual competitions, Ukraine secured  gold in the men’s team sabre event thanks largely to an excellent performance from Vadim Tsedrik, while China bounced back from earlier individual losses to claim the women’s team foil title.

The next IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Cup is due to take place from July 9 to 12 in Warsaw.
