US Olympic chiefs on Thursday expressed confidence in security for the 2024 Paris Olympics after a deadly weekend attack in the French capital.

Germany's sports minister, Nancy Faeser, on Saturday called on the International Olympic Committee to carry out a "very close examination" of the backgrounds of Russian athletes and to exclude those who have supported the war in Ukraine from the 2024 Olympic Games.

Ukraine's government is "very concerned" by calls from sports federations and national Olympic committees to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in Paris next year, its deputy sports minister told AFP.

Following the unanimous support of Swiss sport, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that it is also convinced of the potential of the Swiss Olympic project. The IOC has included Switzerland in a "privileged dialogue" for the organisation of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2038.

The International Olympic Committee announced a list of 32 candidates Wednesday for elections to be held during the Paris Games from July 26 - August 11, when about 10,500 athletes are eligible to vote.

Russia has never positioned the Friendship Games as an alternative to other competitions, Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin said.
