World and Olympic champion Joe Choong of Britain is likely to start as favourite in the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Cup Final in Ankara over the next four days when the first Olympic qualification spot for Paris 2024 will be at stake.

Choong finished fourth in Sofia to suggest that he is running into form just at the right time with the season finale set to be staged in the Turkish capital from tomorrow until Sunday (June 4).

The World Cup ranking in the men’s field of 36 is led by Egypt's Mohanad Shaban.

He finished fourth in the season opener at home in Cairo but followed up with gold in Ankara and silver in Budapest to finish the regular season with 163 qualification points.

Martin Vlach of the Czech Republic has also been a consistent performer this season with bronze in both Cairo and Sofia and in between a fifth-place finish on his last visit to Ankara.

Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Ahmed El-Gendy of Egypt is also in the line-up along with bronze medallist Jun Woong-tae of South Korea.

In the women’s competition, Lithuania’s Ieva Serapinaite has been an impressive performer so far this season.

She won the World Cup in Ankara and took bronze in Sofia to lead the World Cup rankings.

Only one point behind after the regular season is Salma Abdelmaksoud of Egypt, who clinched bronze in Cairo and Budapest.

The best performance of the season so far for Italy’s 2022 world champion Elena Micheli has been fourth in Cairo, but her victory at the World Championships last year suggests that she is a competitor for the big occasion.

Last year's World Cup Final winner Elodie Clouvel of France is targeting what would be her fourth Olympics on home soil.
