The Polish team edged out China and Germany in 1min 38.38sec in the women's K4 500 metres final on the Malta Regatta Course.

Katarzyna Kolodziejczyk triumphed in 41.33sec ahead of Denmark’s Frederikke Matthiesen and Croatia’s Anamaria Govorčinović in the women's K1 200m, and Martyna Klatt and Helena Wiśniewska followed up their women's K2 200m victory in Szeged with another gold in 38.95.

They also won the K2 500m race in 1:44.62, beating compatriots Karolina Naja and Anna Pulawska by just 0.20, and there was a Polish one-two in the men's C4 500m too.

Amelia Braun and Julusz Kitewski were the other home winners, triumphing in the mixed C2 500m.

China and Ukraine both won three gold medals at the World Cup, with two going to Denmark, Hungary, Italy and the Czech Republic.

Two-time Olympic medallist Liudmyla Luzan triumphed in the women's C1 200m and 500m races.

Wang Yin led a women's C1 5,000m one-two with Li Li, crossing the finish line in 27:50.52 to beat her compatriot by three seconds.

Portugal, Sweden, Lithuania and Latvia took one apiece, and there was a historic victory for Lai, who clocked 1:53.50 to edge out Ukraine's Taras Mazovskyi by 0.03 in the men's C1 500m final.

"It's our first medal, so I’m so happy, but I think I was just lucky," Lai said afterwards.

"I’ve been training in the Czech Republic for two months.

"I felt I was paddling strongly, but I felt very good here."

Sweden's Melina Andersson was one of the most dominant performers in Poznań, notching 23:53.59 to triumph by more than 46 seconds over Argentina's Maria Garro.

France's capital Paris is due to host the third leg of the ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup from August 30 to September 1.
