India were the highest-profile casualty from the group stage of badminton's Sudirman Cup in Suzhou, falling to Malaysia and Chinese Taipei.

Australia completed the Group C line-up which looked the toughest of the four at the mixed team tournament, but India were well beaten by Chinese Taipei and Malaysia which ended their hopes of progressing.

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu was part of the Indian team, but lost 21-14, 18-21, 21-17 to Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Tai Tzu Ying in a 4-1 defeat to Chinese Taipei in their opening match at the Suzhou Olympic Sports Centre.

Sindhu was beaten 14-21, 21-10, 22-20 in a 5-0 thrashing by Malaysia which ended India's hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

India's Thomas Cup gold medal-winner HS Prannoy lost to World Championships bronze medallist Chou Tien-chen 21-19, 21-15 in the Chinese Taipei defeat.

Another Thomas Cup winner in Kidambi Srikanth lost 21-16, 21-17 to Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia, while doubles pairing Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were beaten 21-13, 17-21, 21-18 by Chinese Taipei's Olympic champion Lee Yang and Ye Hong Wei and 21-18, 21-19 by Malaysia's Olympic bronze medallists Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.

It was Malaysia who won the group decider 4-1 against Chinese Taipei to finish top, after both teams had beaten Australia 5-0.

A 4-1 victory against Australia provided some consolation for India.

Malaysia are set to face Group A runners-up Denmark, whose team includes men's singles Olympic champion and world number one Viktor Axelsen.

Denmark overcame Singapore 4-1 and Egypt 5-0 in their group before going down to a 5-0 defeat to hosts China.

Defending champions China have a team which includes Tokyo 2020 women's singles champion Chen Yufei, women's doubles silver medallists Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan and men's doubles runner-up Liu Yuchen, as well as mixed doubles world champions Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong.

They are set to face Group B runners-up Indonesia in the quarter-finals.

Indonesia, including men's singles world number two Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, started with a 5-0 win against Canada and 4-1 triumph over Germany, but had to settle for second after a 3-2 defeat to Thailand.

Thailand are set to play the 2021 runners-up Japan in the last eight, after they finished second to South Korea in Group D.

South Korea overcame France and England 4-1, then found top form to ease past Japan 5-0.

An Se-young saw off Japanese back-to-back world champion Akane Yamaguchi 21-11, 21-15 in a clash between the two top-ranked women's singles players.

South Korea are set to play Chinese Taipei in the other quarter-final, with all four ties scheduled for tomorrow.
