Cuban Olympic and world medallists had a day to forget as the quarterfinals of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Men's World Boxing Championships here concluded.

Three-time Olympic bronze medallist Lázaro Álvarez, Tokyo 2020 light heavyweight gold medallist Arlen López and five-time world champion Julio César La Cruz all crashed out of the tournament.

Seventh seed and Asian Games silver medallist Baatarsükhiin Chinzorig of Mongolia defeated Álvarez in the light welterweight category.

The Mongolian gave Álvarez a reality check as he took the first round 5-0.

While a comeback was expected, Chinzorig went offensive and landed some blows on the face and below the belt of the Cuban to take round two 4-1.

Álvarez picked up the pace and started the final round with some good punches winning 5-0.

But the judges declared Chinzorig as the winner, 4-1 on split decision.

López was pitted against Tuohetaerbieke Tanglatihan of China in the light heavyweight class.

It was all out attack from López against Tuohetaerbieke, launching some heavy blows to take the first two rounds 4-1 and 3-2.

But the Cuban was troubled by Tuohetaerbieke in the final round.

The judges opted for a bout review and gave the Chinese a 4-3 split decision win.

Asian champion and eighth seed Lazizbek Mullojonov of Uzbekistan knocked out top seed La Cruz in the heavyweight category.

Mullojonov was quicker than La Cruz and landed a flurry of punches in round one, winning 4-1.

While the Cuban managed to counter better in round two, the pace of the Uzbek star was troubling La Cruz.

Mullojonov won 3-2 in the second round.     

The third round saw La Cruz recuperate to land some quick punches on the face, followed by a combination.

But it was not enough as he was eliminated 4-1 via split decision.

Meanwhile, one Cuban caused an upset too as Saidel Horta stunned top seed Saidel Horta in the featherweight class.

Temirzhanov, who is also a world silver medallist, was on the receiving end of punches in round one, with Horta winning 4-1.

The Cuban controlled the second round as well, landing heavy blows against Temirzhanov.

Some sensational combinations, targeting the face of Temirzhanov, secured round three as well, wining the bout 5-0 via unanimous decision.

Indian boxers had a fruitful day as Deepak Bhoria defeated Nurzhigit Diushebaev of Kyrgyzstan in the flyweight category.

His compatriots Nishant Dev and Mohammad Hussamuddin also confirmed medals for the subcontinent.

Dev was giving Jorge Cuéllar of Cuba a hard time in their light middleweight bout and was attacking and landing blows throughout, winning the first two rounds 5-0 and 4-1.

With another dominant round, attacking the face of Cuban Cuéllar, Dev secured a 5-0 unanimous decision victory.

Two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Hussamuddin sent Bulgarian fifth seed Javier Ibáñez packing in the featherweight division.

Hussamuddin edged the first round 3-2 and upped the game for the second, managing to connect his blows in great style.

It earned him a huge 4-1 win in round two, with the 29-year-old working his combinations well.

Ibáñez lost 3-4 via split decision.

Hosts Uzbekistan also had plenty of wins with super heavyweight star Bakhodir Jalolov stealing the show once again.

Up against Kamshybek Kunkabayev of Kazakhstan, the reigning Olympic champion was approaching the game slow.

However, Jalolov executed some powerful blows to get the first two rounds 5-0.

He completed the formalities in great fashion as Kunkabayev was not able to make an impact.

Competition is due to continue day after tomorrow (May 12) with a rest day planned for tomorrow.
