Egypt's Nour El Sherbini has reclaimed the world number one spot in the Professional Squash Association rankings following her third round victory in the World Championships against Sarah-Jane Perry in Chicago.

The 27-year-old cruised past England's Commonwealth Games bronze medallist 3-0 to book her place into the women's singles quarter-finals at Union Station.

The win also ended her compatriot Nouran Gohar's 57-week reign atop the world rankings.

It is her third time in first place after a 31-month stint between 2016 and 2018 before a 17-month stay between 2020 and 2022.

"I'm pleased to be going back to number one but it's still a long week and a very important one for me," said El Sherbini.

"I just want to take it day-by-day without thinking about it that much.

"But of course I'm happy to be back to number one and hopefully I can keep this spot."

The match of the day in the women's tournament saw 11th seed Nele Gilis get the better of number seven Olivia Fiechter of the United States in a back-and-forth battle.

Gilis became the first female Belgian player in history to reach the quarter-finals as she won 9-11, 13-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-8 after 94 minutes.

Englishwoman Georgina Kennedy became the only British player remaining in the tournament after she beat Egypt's Rowan Elaraby 3-0 and Wales' Tesni Evans fell by the same margin to Joelle King of New Zealand.

In the men's event, Tarek Momen narrowly avoided an upset against unseeded Mohamed Abouelghar in an all-Egpytian clash by a 3-2 scoreline.

Another match between two Egpytians, Marwan ElShorbagy and Karim Abdel Gawad, went the way of the underdog.

Abdel Gawad trounced his opponent 3-0 as he found the form of his 2016 World Championships win to prevail in just 28 minutes.

Peruvian Diego Elias and Mohammed ElShorbagy of England claimed the remaining quarter-final spots as they beat Indian Saurav Ghosal and Egypt's Youssef Ibrahim, respectively.

Competition is set to continue tomorrow with the first two quarter-finals in both the men's and women's tournaments.
