China have beaten Australia to win the first stop of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women’s 3x3 Series on home soil in Wuhan.

The home team featured 2020 Olympic bronze medallists Zhang Zhiting, Wan Jiyuan, Wang Lili alongside Zhang Yi who had been brought into the squad this year.

"It feels quite different playing alongside experienced players as I have peace of mind and can fully showcase myself on the court," Zhang Yi told official Chinese state media Xinhua.

In an eight team tournament, China stormed through unbeaten to reach the final.

Asian Champions Australia, who had not been sighted in the FIBA Women's 3x3 series in recent times, beat Japan 21-20 as they too went through without defeat.

In the final, roared on by the home crowd, China won 21-13, with Zhang Ziting contributing nine points whilst her team mated Wang Lili  was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

"It was an important opportunity for us to test our squad ahead of the World Cup, our players worked hard throughout this competition," China head coach Xu Jiamin said.

SC Yuanda from Sichuan province finished third overall.

The FIBA 3x3 World Cup is set to take place in Vienna at the end of May.

The next leg of the FIBA 3x3 women’s tour is scheduled to begin on May 20 in Astara in Azerbaijan.

The tour has a total of 23 stops and carries a record prize fund of $1 million (£792,000/€908,000)

The season is due to culminate with finals in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar on September 16 and 17.
