Organisers of the Oran 2022 Mediterranean Games have held a debriefing session in Podgorica, Montenegro to pass on knowledge to 2026 hosts Taranto and officials from the Mediterranean Beach Games to be held in Heraklion, Crete this year.

"The Games left a great legacy, beyond the sporting level, in the fields of human resource training, logistical infrastructure, volunteerism and culture," said Oran 2022 President Mohamed Aziz Derouaz.

A total of 3,251 athletes from 26 countries had taken part in 24 sports, which included women’s boxing and mixed events in shooting being held for the first time.

The 18 events on the Olympic weightlifting programme were also contested, while 19 Games records were broken during competition.

Some 600 hours of television coverage were generated by the Games as part of a deal with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

Organisers also confirmed that 4,324 volunteers had taken part in the Games.

ICMG Athletes’ Commission chairman Sašo Bertončelj highlighted the "excellent atmosphere created by the fans in all the stadiums of Oran."

Delegates also heard a progress report on Taranto 2026.

"Taranto 2026 will be environmentally friendly and will fulfil all the sustainability terms," Taranto 2026 general sirector Elio Sannicandro promised.


Rowing is to return to the core programme for 2026 while finswimming is set to be included for the first time.

An increase in women’s events is also planned for the 2026 edition.

The ICMG have established a Commission for the 2030 Games to "study a proposal regarding the programme of the 2030 Games, based on youth-friendly sports, with special television interest and low organising costs."

The conference was attended by some 60 officials from National Olympic Committees in the region, representatives of the EBU and Microplus who provide timing services for the Games.

The 2023 Mediterranean Beach Games are set to begin on September 2 in Heraklion.

The Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games are scheduled to open on June 13 2026.
