The elite races in Santa Eulària featured a one-lap one-kilometre swim and a one-lap 5km run.

Home favourite Fernandez Nieto was third out of the water in the men's race with his 13min 17sec effort, although only behind Hungarian pair Márton Kropkó and Gergő Dobi by 1sec.

On the run, he held off a strong challenge from Britain's Christopher Perham with a time of 14:58 to finish in an overall winning time of 29:04.

Perham was 7sec quicker on the run, but trailed Fernandez Nieto by 4sec.

Another Briton in Jimmy Lund completed the podium in 29:13.

Dobi took sixth place in 29:29 to be crowned under-23 world champion, with Kropkó fifth in 29:22 for the junior world title.

Fernandez Nieto said after his victory: "I am very happy with my race, especially today, knowing that my whole family is here watching and cheering for me.

"I want to dedicate this victory to all my family, friends and coach who have supported me all the time, especially the last months that have been tough."

After a silver in Saturday's (April 29) duathlon, Bragmayer went one better in the women's race.

Bragmayer was neck-and-neck with Márta Kropkó on the swim, her time of 14:43 just 2sec slower than that of her compatriot.

She then made an early move on the run and did not look back, completing it in 17:18 for an overall time of 32:56.

"I finally became a World Champion, I’m so happy, I really enjoyed that," Bragmayer said.

"I really didn’t want to lead the swim.

"I used to but now it’s ok for me not to."

Slovakia's Margareta Vrabolova placed second in 33:05, also securing the junior crown.

Céline Kaiser of Germany earned bronze in 33:10, and the under-23 title went to Kropkó with a fifth-place finish in 33:22.

No competition is scheduled tomorrow at the World Triathlon Multisport Championships, with the next scheduled action in the cross duathlon on Wednesday (May 3).
