USA Boxing has announced that it has terminated its membership with the International Boxing Association (IBA) as it looks to join rival global governing body World Boxing.

The move has been confirmed by USA Boxing executive director Mike McAtee in a letter to members of the national governing body revealing the organisation's intent to submit an application to become a member of World Boxing.

The announcement comes on the same day the IBA filed an official complaint against individuals and entities involved in the formation of World Boxing which it dismissed as a "rogue" organisation.

World Boxing was launched on April 13 with the aim of preserving the sport's Olympic future after it was left off the initial programme for Los Angeles 2028 amid an ongoing fued between the IBA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The IBA, led by Russian official Umar Kremlev, said that the complaint had been registered by the Boxing Independent Integrity Unit (BIIU) and would be reviewed "as soon as possible", insisting that those found guilty will "face consequences".

The organisation has been suspended by the IOC since 2019 due to concerns over judging and refereeing, financial stability and governance.

This led to a IOC Boxing Task Force handling the sport at Tokyo 2020 and it is set to do the same again at Paris 2024.

USA Boxing said it had decided to bring to an end to its membership with the IBA due to its "failure to uphold its mission and principles of its constitution and failure to respect the Olympic Charter and Movement".

It revealed that it would "commit full support" for World Boxing's  efforts to seek provisional recognition with the IOC and as an International Federation "for the sport of Olympic-style boxing, Paralympic boxing (adaptive) and esport boxing".

A resolution approving these actions was unanimously passed by the USA Boxing Board of Directors when they met on March 22 and the body has now issued a letter of termination to the IBA.

Among the reasons for the move outlined in the letter include concerns that the IBA had faile+d to follow the IOC's recommendations, its "false" announcement that it would run its own Olympic qualification process despite being stripped of the rights to do so and attempts to "intimidate" and "threaten" National Federations "not to exercise their constitutional rights of autonomy and independence".

USA Boxing said it would "immediately" begin the process to join World Boxing with the aim of submitting its application "on or about May 1, 2023".

"USA Boxing is committed to work tirelessly with World Boxing, like-minded National Federations and worldwide Olympic-style boxing community to earn the privilege to be part of the Olympic Movement now and in the years to come," the letter from USA Boxing read.

McAtee is one of five individuals being investigated by the BIIU over a possible ethics breach after being accused of "inciting a boycott" after several countries, including the United States, pulled out of the Women's and Men's World Championships.

USA Boxing President Tyson Lee is a member of World Boxing's Interim Executive Board along with Dutch Boxing Federation leader Boris van der Vorst, GB Boxing chief executive Matthew Holt, Boxing New Zealand chair Keith Walker, German Boxing Association secretary general Michael Mueller, Swedish Boxing Federation Board member Karin Mattsson, Toulson and Filipino boxing completion official Karina Picson.

Simon Toulson has been appointed as interim secretary general of World Boxing which is set to elect an Executive Board and a President at its inaugural Congress planned for November this year.

Britain’s reigning Olympic middleweight champion Lauren Price and American Tokyo 2020 super-heavyweight silver medallist Richard Torrez Jr are the two athlete representatives on the Board.

The IBA announced today that it had issued an official complaint against individuals and entities involved in creation of World Boxing

"Following the announcement of the establishment of the rogue international boxing organization, the IBA has initiated a series of actions that are designed to provide absolute clarity to all boxing stakeholders regarding the autonomy of the IBA as the global governing body of boxing," a statement from the IBA read.

"The IBA strongly condemns the efforts of individuals to damage the significant strides taken by the IBA over the last few years to secure boxers’ the best future possible.

"The International Boxing Association reiterates that it will continue doing its utmost to protect the organization and all its member National Federations from any harm caused by individuals or entities within or outside of the IBA boxing family."

The BIIU investigation comes after the IBA warned of possible sanctions against those involved in World Boxing.

The IBA insisted earlier this month that participation in World Boxing would lead to the exclusion of the National Federation concerned from its membership and officials involved would be declared "non-eligible".
