The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation has announced plans to stage an "intensive" two-week national training camp for its athletes in the city of Birnin-Kebbi.

The camp is due to take place in the run-up to the first edition of the President Cup National Open Championship, due to be held in Abuja next month, as reported by the Nigeria Independent.

Nigeria Taekwondo Federation President Alhaji Abdullahi Saidu Baba said: "Let me tell you that this camp is organised by the Board of the federation where we felt that we should not keep our athletes idle for a long time because there are many upcoming competitions like the African Games and Olympics, so we concluded that it is necessary for them to {go} into camping, every now and then."

In total, 32 athletes and three coaches are set to take part in the camp.

Explaining the selection of Birnin-Kebbi Saidu Baba added: "You can all see that these facilities are of an international calibre, and we have made this location incredibly ready so that the athletes can come here and focus because they will all be in one place where they won’t need to move up and down and they will be closely supervised."

Details of any prize money on offer at the President’s Cup tournament have yet to be confirmed, while the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation are still seeking a sponsor for the event.

Nigeria entered one taekwondo athlete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, with Elizabeth Anyanacho defeated at the round-of-16 stage in the women’s under-67 kilograms category.
