Belgium’s Sven Serré has been elected as the new President of Badminton Europe (BEC), replacing Joao Matos, who had been Acting President since September 2022.

Matos had been Acting President since Slovakian Peter Tarcala resigned last year citing personal reasons.

Serré was elected to the post during the BEC’s Congress in Baku, Azerbaijan, receiving 32 out of 43 votes.

He will now take the post for a four-year term through until 2027.

Badminton Europe general secretary Brian Agerbak said: "Sven has a lot of experience in various areas of badminton.

"He is quite visionary and presented some interesting plans for the future and ideas on how we can improve.

"I think he is going to come in and bring structure to a lot of the things we are doing.

"He will add some new ideas, which is always beneficial."

Meanwhile, two new members of BEC’s Board were elected, in Viktoria Tsvetanova of Bulgaria and Peter Emptage of England.

Tsvetanova received 38 out of 43 votes during the first round, with Emptage elected after three rounds of voting, defeating Nir Sadeh of Israel and Klavs Andreassen of Denmark.

Richard Vaughan of Wales was elected as the new European Badminton World Federation vice-president, after receiving 31 out of 43 votes.

Vaughan has been a BEC Board member since 2015, and says he is looking forward to representing Europe’s interests in the world of badminton.

Elsewhere during the Congress a Members Forum was held, giving delegates from 43 countries the chance to discuss information, experiences and ideas.

Topics covered included inclusivity and Para badminton, sustainability, player development and the presentation of the BEC’s major events.

The Forum also included a presentation from Paris 2024 chief executive and BWF Council member Étienne Thobois, about preparations for next year’s Olympics.

Thobois represented France during the badminton competition at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, losing in the first-round to China's Sun Jun.

The BEC’s Awards Gala also took place in Baku, with the BEC’s Male Player of the Year award going to Viktor Axelsen of Denmark.

Isabel Lohau of Germany was named the BEC’s Female Player of the Year, while Oksana Kozyna of Ukraine won the BEC Para Badminton Player of the Year prize.
