Paralympians Neville Sinclair and Alphanso Cunningham have been honoured by the University of Technology in Kingston at its Caribbean Conference on Sports Sciences for their contributions to Parasport in Jamaica.

Cunningham is a double Paralympic champion in the F53 category as he triumphed in discus at Athens 2004 and javelin in London 2012.

He is also a world champion in javelin from 2013 while recording three Parapan American Games discus victories in 2007, 2011, and 2015.

Sinclair is also a successful discus thrower as he has appeared at three editions of the Paralympic Games - Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, and Sydney 2000 - and two World Championships in 1998 and 2002.

"I am humbled to be recognised by the University of Technology and I receive this honour on behalf of the entire Paralympic family particularly the athletes who sacrifice so much to represent our country and who are continuing to fight the odds with success," said Sinclair, who is now the sport manager for the Jamaica Paralympic Association (JPA).

Both athletes started their sporting careers as youth athletes at the Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre in August Town.

The facility is said to be the home of the local Paralympic Movement.

"It was a bit challenging but if you have a spirit to overcome, which I did then and still have, you just move forward with the confidence that you will do your family and country proud and give lessons to those young ones who, like me, started with a dream," said Cunningham.

The Conference was held with the theme "enabling abilities in sport: encompassing all".

It saw discussions take place on subjects including supporting abilities in sport, gender ability in sport, transgender participation in female sport, and anti-doping.
