Hosts Australia dominated the 2023 Rip Curl Pro in Bells Beach - finishing in the top two in both the men's and women's competitions.

Ethan Ewing and Tyler Wright were crowned as champions at the fourth World Surf League (WSL) leg of the season.

The competition was supposed to finish on Friday (April 13), but due to outstanding weather it concluded three days early.

In the men's final, Ewing edged past compatriot Ryan Callinan as he secured an average heat score of 14.50 to Callinan's 11.

The heavily favoured champion used the wind conditions to his advantage and had his best score in the ninth round with 7.67.

Callinan could not reach the ninth round as he was not able to match Ewing's previous best score of 6.83, as he was only able to tally 5.73.

En-route to the final, Ewing defeated Brazil's Filipe Toledo in the semi-final, who was last year's overall winner.

He saw off South Africa's Matthew McGillivray in the quarter-final, Toledo's team-mate Gabriel Medina in the round of 16 and fellow Australian Owen Wright in the round of 32.

In the women's final, Wright defeated team-mate Molly Picklum with a heat score of 16 to 12.

It took 11 rounds to crown the winner in an expectedly even-matched affair.

Picklum was slightly favoured to win by the fans, but was unable to match Wright despite surfing one more round than her.

On her way to the final, Wright had to edge past another compatriot in the last four, as she beat Stephanie Gilmore, who has the most titles for a woman in WSL history.

She defeated Carissa Moore of Hawaii in the quarter-finals and Moore's team-mate Gabriela Bryant in the round of 16.

Ewing is currently fourth in the WSL overall standings, 6,000 points behind leader João Chianca of Brazil.

Wright is second on the women's leaderboard, as Picklum remains on top with with a 2,300 point lead.

The next event is scheduled to be the Margaret River Pro, also in Australia, which is expected to last from April 20 to 30.
