Jamaica accumulated 78 medals, 40 of them being gold, at the 2023 Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) Games in Nassau, the Bahamas as they asserted their dominance in the Caribbean region in track and field.

They finished atop the medal tally at the Games, a competition for junior athletes from Caribbean countries, which is currently divided into under-17 and under-20 age categories.

Former International Association of Athletic Federations President Lamine Diack described the event as "one of the most important for young athletes in the world."

Multiple Olympic champions have participated in the Games as youngsters, with a 16-year-old Usain Bolt, representing Jamaica, winning the sprinting competitions at the 2003 event. 

Along with the 40 golds, Jamaica also earned 22 silvers and 16 bronzes.

Second place in the medal tally was hosts Bahamas, who ended with 10 golds, 13 silvers and 23 bronzes for a total of 46 medals.

Trinidad and Tobago finished third on the overall medal podium, with nine golds, 10 silvers and 12 bronzes for a total of 25 medals.

Among the Jamaican winners were Kaheim Carby, who broke the the under-17 CARIFTA boys record for the 100 metres sprint hurdles in clocking 13.49 seconds.

Alexis James also broke a record for the nation, running 13.06sec in the under-20 girls 110m sprint hurdles.

Fellow Jamaican Bryana Davidson defended her under-17 100m sprint hurdles title as she secured a time of 13.31sec.

Demario Prince was also a winner for Jamaica, in the under-20 110m sprint hurdles, clocking a time of 13.27.

The only Jamaican able to win a 200m race was Malique Smith-Band, who secured a time of 20.69 in the under-20 men's event.

The nation was also dominant in the 4x400m relays winning the under-20 men's and women's, and the under-17 boys and girls events.

Grenada have been announced as hosts of the next CARIFTA Games, due to take place from March 30 to April 1 2024.

Grenada last hosted the event in 2016, when Jamaica were also victorious.
