Sara Balzer won individual gold at the women’s International Fencing Federation Sabre World Cup in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium.

The French fencer edged past Yaqi Shao of China 15-13 to claim the individual crown at the Sports Centre de Witte Molen.

Earlier at the semi-final stage Balzer, an Olympic and World Championship team silver medallist, beat Rossella Gregorio of Italy 15-9, while Shao overcame Theodora Gkountoura 15-8.

Gregorio and Gkountoura both earned bronze medals as defeated semi-finalists.

In the women’s team event, gold went to South Korea, after they defeated Italy 45-42.

Ukraine claimed an emotional bronze medal courtesy of a 45-41 win over Hungary.

Earlier in the semi-finals Italy beat Ukraine 45-43, while South Korea edged past Hungary 45-44.
