England's Rob Hawkins has been named Wheelchair Rugby League Player of the Year for 2022 at an awards ceremony in Leeds three seasons after he won the first Young Player of the Year Award.

Hawkins starred in last year's Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup where he helped hosts England to the title with a penalty goal in the final against defending champions France.

He also scored seven tries as his country won in front of a home crowd in Manchester to level France's leading total of two gold medals.

Hawkins was also recognised for his contribution to Halifax Panthers regaining the Wheelchair Super League title, including a five-try haul in the Grand Final victory against Leeds Rhinos.

His England team-mate Nathan Collins succeeded him as Young Player of the Year in what was the first awards ceremony of its kind for three years due to COVID-19 interruptions to the sport.

Collins also played in the Grand Final and scored five tries for the losing Leeds side.

Leeds were also recognised for the Performance of the Year after their 48-34 victory over Catalans Dragons in the Wheelchair Challenge Cup Final in Hull.

Wigan Warriors' Phil Roberts won the Coach of the Year award, while Kieran Holt of the Rochdale Hornets was named Championship Player of the Year, and Ollie Cruickshank claimed Match Official of the Year.

Sheffield Eagles were then recognised as Club of the Year.

Special awards were given to former Leeds and England star James Simpson following his retirement, and to Ralph Rimmer "for his consistent support" of Wheelchair Rugby League as chief executive of the Rugby Football League.

England and Halifax Panthers' Sebastien Bechara was also presented with the Golden Boot award he won during the World Cup as the tournament's best player.
