Mohamed Rafi came from behind to beat home favourite Johanita Scholtz of South Africa 14-21, 21-14, 21-16 after 37 minutes in the women's singles final at the John Barrable Hall.

Mohamed Rafi went into the match as the underdog, with Scholtz 36 places above her in the world rankings, but initial troubles were eventually dealt with as she became Uganda's first champion at the event.

She has enjoyed a rapid rise to the continental summit as just last December she was also a gold medallist at the All Africa Junior Championships in Mauritius.

Opeyori then won his third individual title in the men's singles with an 18-21, 21-13, 21-18 win over Georges Julien Paul of Mauritius.

It took the 25-year-old 46 minutes to get revenge over Paul, who beat him in the 2020 final.

Preceding the singles events, Jarred Elliott and Robert Summers pulled off an upset against Mohamed Abderrahime Belarbi and Adel Hamek of Algeria in the men's doubles.

The unseeded South Africans were clinical as they dispatched them 21-13, 21-17 after just 25 minutes.

Their compatriots Amy Ackerman and Deidre Laurens were also victorious against Algerians in the women's doubles.

The second seeds prevailed 21-19, 21-12 also in 25 minutes.

Koceila and Tanina Mammeri finally put Algeria on top of a podium as they won mixed doubles gold.

The siblings combined to beat top seeds Adham El Gamal and Doha Hany of Egypt 21-15, 21-13.
