Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) has worked with the Malaysia Olympians Association (MOA) to launch a fundraising campaign and a new MOA logo in Shah Alam.

The MOA launched a logo design competition for HWUM students in October last year, with its Committee shortlisting three entries from the 15 submitted.

The top three received cash prizes of MYR 300 (£57/$69/€64), MYR 200 (£38/$46/€43) and MYR 100 (£18/$22/€21) respectively, in addition to Haruka Bakery vouchers, a UniWatt stress ball and a badminton racquet.

Other participants also received Haruka Bakery vouchers, a UniWatt stress ball and a badminton racquet.

The Spirit of Olympism 2023 fundraising campaign was also launched alongside the new logo.

Marathon runner Alex Goh Shaw Peng is volunteering for the MOA in the campaign, including a cycling event from Selangor to Johor Bahru.

He was presented with the special campaign flag by MOA President Noraseela Mohd Khalid and Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh to mark its launch.

Yeoh underlined the importance of the campaign.

"We should always aim to empower youth through sports as this can encourage social transformation and contribute to nation building," she said.

"Sports can also be a catalyst for purpose-driven leadership and I understand that this is the reason MOA collaborated with the students of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia as it is an institution that has positive education as its core, which is aimed at cultivating purpose-driven leadership among youth."

Mohd Khalid added: "We hope that the fundraising campaign will help us raise awareness about promoting the role of sports in nation-building as well as building national sentiment, where Malaysians from all walks of life are connected by a common sense of purpose.

"We also hope to promote sports excellence with lifelong values such as teamwork, ethics, and sportsmanship.

"Most importantly, to encourage youth participation in sports by developing and inculcating the spirit of Olympism."
