Brian Lewis, the former President of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC), has claimed the nation's hosting of the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games can help towards the country establishing its own identity following its years of colonialism.

In a column in the Trinidad & Tobago Guardian, Lewis revealed the Games are set to come to the nation, despite opposition from some Commonwealth nations.

He believes, it is an opportunity to move forward once again with a unifying event, echoing the words of Trinidad and Tobago's first Prime Minister, Eric Williams - mentioning how the country has pushed on from colonialism, noting the declaration of Emancipation Day as a public holiday, but still found criticism of the lack of national identity.

"We are drifting and rudderless with out a national vision, purpose, consensus and shared values to unify us," wrote Lewis.

"Dismissive of the story of our national history, we are a pluralist society devoid of a national identity and narrative.

"It is an axiomatic fact that law-abiding citizens of Trinidad and Tobago have lost confidence in the illusion of fair democracy, fed up of ill-experienced people with inclinations other than the public good, the institutions, leaders and the spite politics that marginalise significant groups.

"No trust no love - the illusion of autonomy and personal responsibility replaced by insecurity, anxiety, stress and depression.

"The work of nation building is ongoing.

"The past is alive and asking new questions."

Lewis has been one of the most outspoken voices in the Olympic Movement, supporting anti-racism initiatives and has been critical of the International Olympic Committee's past with curbing civil rights protest of athletes.

He also served as the President of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees, before stepping down last year.

The 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games are scheduled to take place from August 4 to 11 2023.
