The vice-president of the Mauritania Football Association (MFA), Pape Amghar Dieng, has died following his nation's victory over Mali at the African Nations Championship in Algeria.

He died on Tuesday (January 24) after Mauritania recorded a historic 1-0 win over Mali in Oran in the Championship to take them into the quarter-finals, where they are to face Senegal today.

Dieng is said to have died while celebrating the victory, the team's first quarter-finals at the competition.

After learning of the news, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) extended its commiserations.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Federation Mauritanian Football family under the leadership of Ahmed Yahya, the family of Mr Dieng and Mauritanians during this difficult and sad moment," said CAF.

"Condolences to the Mauritania Football family and the people of Mauritania."

CAF added that he was a significant individual in his leadership and the development of football in the country.

Other matches set to take place in the quarter-finals are Algeria against Ivory Coast, Madagascar against Mozambique and Niger against Ghana.
