The logo for this year's World Judo Championships has been unveiled, with Qatari organisers promising to deliver an "exceptional" event in May.

The Doha 2023 Organising Committee has revealed the design which combines the words "judo" and "Doha" that can be read both vertically and horizontally.

The letter "D" is central to Doha 2023's brand concept with organisers claiming that it not only symbolises the first letter of the Qatari capital but also stimulates judo's skills and movements.

Red and purple have been chosen with the hope of highlighting the spirit and excitement of the sport, while the tatami is said to represent the backgrounds of all the logo elements.

"We together feel confident that this international judo event will hit the peak of success and will be an exceptional event," said Khalid bin Hamad Al Attiyah, deputy chairman of Doha 2023 and general manager of the tournament.

"We are grateful for the unwavering support of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, and His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, the President of Qatar Olympic Committee and the Local Organising Committee.

"Thankfully to our world class experience of hosting major sport events and our sport infrastructure, we are ready to organise a global judo event that will remain memorable."

The unveiling of the logo comes after Qatar received the International Judo Federation (IJF) flag at the Closing Ceremony of last year's event staged in Uzbek capital Tashkent.

Doha is scheduled to hold this year's edition from May 7 to 14 as the Middle East prepares to play host to the IJF flagship event for the first time.
