Members of the team involved in delivering the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games have received awards in the 2023 New Year Honours list.

The President of Commonwealth Games England Denise Lewis has been made a Dame, while the chair of the Birmingham 2022 Organising Committee John Crabtree has been knighted.

Dame Denise, a double Olympic heptathlon medallist, which included a gold medal at Sydney 2000, said she felt extremely proud at receiving the honour.

"I'm delighted and immensely proud - this doesn't normally happen to people like me and I just think I am extremely honoured, extremely proud and it's right up there, I just can't wait," Dame Denise said, as reported by BBC News.

Crabtree, chair of the Organising Committee and the current Lord-Lieutenant of the West Midlands region, also spoke of his pride at his honour.

"For my part, I am both honoured and humbled to be awarded a knighthood and to be in the company of wonderful people from across the West Midlands that make a real difference," Crabtree said, as reported by The Business Desk.

Organising Committee chief executive Ian Reid, who has led the team behind Birmingham 2022 for four years added of his accolade"I am immensely proud to have been awarded a Commander of the British Empire in the New Year Honours list.

"It was unexpected but it’s a lovely surprise at the end of a very special year.

"It is also pleasing to see colleagues and representatives from some of our key partners who helped deliver the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games be recognised with honours too.

"An event on this scale can only be successfully delivered by a huge team of people and although the work of some individuals has been highlighted through these honours, I would like to once again thank everyone involved in helping to stage Birmingham 2022."

Chair of Commonwealth Games England Ian Metcalfe has been named an Order of the British Empire, while Chris Jones, the project director of the Sandwell Aquatics Centre, the only newly-built venue for the multi-sport event, which hosted swimming and diving, has been made a Member of the British Empire.

Three figures involved in Birmingham 2022 have also received British Empire Medals - Shah Skeikh Shepali Begum, the outreach and impacts manager of the Commonwealth Games Legacy Team, Sarah Coffey, the executive assistant to the chief executive and head of legacy Bethan Stimpson, who put together Gen22, which helped 16 to 24-year-olds from the region gain work experience at the Games.
