The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has held its final World Cups of 2022 with Italy enjoying success with women's épée and men's and women's foil golds.

Serbia's capital Belgrade hosted a women's foil World Cup in which former world champion Alice Volpi claimed gold for Italy.

She dominated Germany's Leonie Ebert in the final bout at the Belgrade Fair Hall Five, triumphing 15-6.

Another Italian in Francesca Palumbo earned a bronze after losing 15-8 to Volpi in the semi-finals, while the United States' Olympic champion Lee Kiefer also placed third after a 15-13 defeat to Ebert.

The team gold also went to Italy after a convincing 45-22 victory against the US in the final, with France earning bronze by defeat after the Japanese team withdrew for medical reasons.

Japan's capital Tokyo held a men's foil World Cup at the Komazawa Olympic Park Gymnasium, where Tommaso Marini took the individual honours for Italy.

He overcame France's Maxime Pauty 15-13 in the final.

Bronze medals went to Egypt's Alaaeldin Abouelkassem and Japan's Yudai Nagano.

Abouelkassem withdrew from his semi-final against Marini for medical reasons, while Nagano was beaten 15-12 by Pauty.

The US clinched the team title with a 45-31 victory against Japan, with Italy taking bronze by overcoming France 45-38.

Women's and men's épée competitions were held at the Vancouver Convention Centre in the Canadian city.

Italy’s Giulia Rizzi earned individual gold in the women's event with a 15-9 win against Hong Kong's Vivian Kong, after a semi-final victory by 15 points to 11 against Hungary's Anna Kun.

Canada's Alexanne Verret joined Kun as a bronze medallist after a 15-8 defeat to Kong in the semi-finals.

Olympic silver medallist Gergely Siklósi of Hungary was the men's individual champion in Vancouver, beating France's Yannick Borel 15-12 in the final.

Lan Minghao of China placed joint-third after losing 15-10 to Siklósi in the semi-finals, with Alexandre Bardenet losing the other last four bout 15-12 to his compatriot Borel.

Both team titles were won by France, who beat South Korea 37-36 in the women's final and Italy 45-34 in the men's decider.

The next FIE World Cup is due to be held from January 12 to 15 with competition in men's and women's foil scheduled.
